Heartworm infestation is a year-round problem in southern Texas. After entering our shelter, every animal is tested for heartworms before being put up for adoption. The Help-A-Friend Fund collects generous donations to pay for costly heartworm tests
& treatments for the animals in our shelter.
At the Humane Society SPCA of Bexar County, we make every effort to find the best home for each pet in our care. Sadly, many of the dogs and cats that come to us have been abused or neglected and others are injured or have chronic illnesses. These injured or ill animals are treated based on the funds available at the time of intake or illness. Through the Michaels' Medical Fund, you can choose to make a one time or monthly contribution for a dog or cat with special needs. This will defray the costs associated with the provision of necessary medical care they need and deserve. Once these animals are healthy, they will then be available to the public for adoption.

Can’t adopt a friend? Can’t foster? Sponsor a mature dog or cat and help Save A Life!
It’s a fact: older animals have a much harder and longer time becoming adopted. The Humane Society SPCA of Bexar County is a limited intake facility that does not euthanize animals for space. Your contributions to our Guardian Angel Program make it possible for us to reduce the adoption fees associated with older animals housed at our facility, thus increasing their chances of adoption.
