Each animal that arrives at the Humane Society is a special individual, and is treated as such.
Our Special Needs wing accommodates animals who suffer from heartworm infection, amputation
or other life-altering injury, or advanced age.

Heartworm infection is a serious problem in San Antonio and its surrounding areas. Due to our warm, wet climate, the mosquitoes which carry juvenile heartworms breed prolifically and can spread the parasites to many animals-- even humans. A great number of dogs coming into our shelter are afflicted with heartworm infection, and must be treated before they can go to their new homes. The treatments are both time and money consuming, with treatments spanning months and ranging from $200-$500.
The Humane Society established the Help-A-Friend fund to help pay for the medications and the care of afflicted animals for the duration of their heartworm treatments. Your help is greatly appreciated in being able to issue these dogs a clean bill of health with their new homes. Obesity- Another Form of Cruelty
These animals, while in our care, were kept on special diets, exercised regularly, and sent home to loving owners with instructions on how to keep them on the path to a healthier lifestyle.

Animal obesity is a growing problem in America, and we recently had two examples living at our shelter. Click here for information on pet obesity and what you can do to prevent and treat it at home.
